The First K-pop Song That Made Me Cry

The Song That Surprised Me I was sitting at my computer one afternoon in the early spring of 2021, listening to BTS while scrolling through lyric translations on Doolset’s blog. Outside, the world was still quiet — not quite in lockdown anymore, but not back to normal either. My job had been shut down for months due to COVID-19, and even though I knew I’d be returning soon, I wasn’t looking forward to it. The burnout had settled deep. Then the song changed. “00:00 (Zero O’Clock)” started playing. I was half-reading, half-listening — not expecting anything more than the usual comfort their music gave me. But as I read through the lyrics, something cracked open. I burst into tears. ✨ Welcome to Catching Fancies

Promotional blog graphic for “Catching Fancies” with the title “Welcome to Catching Fancies” and the tagline “Musings on fandom, K-pop, and being a fangirl after 40.” The image features a soft lavender background with playful accents like music notes, a flower, a heart, and a star.

If you’ve found your way here, welcome. This is Catching Fancies, a little blog I created to explore the quiet (and sometimes loud) joy of being a fangirl in her 40s.

I’ve loved music and storytelling for as long as I can remember, and somewhere along the way, I found K-pop—and it stuck. Not just because of the music, but because of the feeling. The energy, the escape, the spark. And maybe, the comfort of knowing you’re not alone in needing something to hold onto.

This blog isn’t about chasing trends or breaking news. It’s about reflection. I’ll be writing essays, fan life thoughts, music memories, and anything else that catches my fancy (pun fully intended).

If you're here as a fellow grown fan—someone who still loves hard, even when the world expects you to quiet down—I hope you feel at home.

Thank you for being part of this.

Let’s see where this goes.

  • What brought you to K-pop or fandom?

  • Who was your first bias?

  • Or just say hi and let me know you’re out there.

You’re not too old. You’re not alone. And I’d love to hear your story.
